Alotau Port

Alotau Port (above) is located at the eastern tip of mainland - Papua New Guinea. The township of Alotau became the provincial capital in 1969 after it was shifted from Samarai and remains the gateway to some of the most remote island communities in the world.

Pilotage:Pilotage is compulsory. Pilot available at 48 hours notice from Alotau.
Tugs:None available. However, arrangements can be done via the Pacific Towing office based in Port Moresby.
Bunkers:Fuel is available by road tankers
only while small vessels can load bulk via pipeline. Supplier: Inter Oil Products Ltd and Islands Petroleum Ltd.
 
Wharf Facilities
Cargo handling Facilities
The available shore shore handling equipment and machinery are forklifts and semi-trailers capable of handling up to 40 footer containers. There are no shore
cranes.

Storage Area
Under cover storage 2430sq.m. Open storage 7,640sq.m.

Bunker provider
Fuel available by road tankers only. Supplier: Inter Oil Products Ltd and Islands Petroleum ltd. None, however there is a new dry dock facility which is in operation at Motukea (Port Moresby) by Curtain Brothers (PNG) Ltd.

Water Provider
Fresh water (treated) is available through pipes and can be restricted during certain periods Flooding or a dry spell). Prior arrangements can be done through the port authority or shipping agents.

Repair Facilities
1. Nako Marine Centre which has a slipway for small boats of less than 20m LOA and is located at the Sanderson Bay
waterfront.
2. Nawae Construction Ltd for building crane hire and slipway services can be contact for vessels greater than 20m LOA.

Waste Disposal
No waste disposal facility is available. Arrangement for disposal can be done with the Port Manager and National
Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA) and removed by the Alotau Town Authority.

Alotau Port is open for business based on shore cargo
or shipping movement/activities. Currently there are two
in-port shipping agents that represent the interest of the
shipowners or shipping principles.
